How apps, data and smartbikes are changing the way we ride – and not always for the better.
Published by Radical Life Studios / MTB Report

The trail used to be freedom.
Now it’s data.
GPS trackers, Strava, smart apps, heart rate sensors – we measure everything.
Distance. Power. Battery. Elevation.
But do we still ride to feel – or just to compare?

From Passion to Performance Sheet

A great ride once depended on emotion.
Now it depends on numbers.
We chase PRs, KOMs and badges.
What started as motivation turned into measurement.
Many don’t even notice: they’re riding for the feed, not the feeling.

Sure – digital tools help us plan, train and stay safe.
But they also reshape the way we ride: less intuition, more calculation.

The Dark Side of Connectivity

Modern bikes are rolling computers.
Bosch, Shimano, Brose – they all collect ride data and sync it to servers you’ll never see.
Convenience comes with a price: control.
Remote diagnostics, update locks, firmware throttling – the power lies with the brand, not the rider.
It’s not paranoia. It’s policy.

The End of Anonymity

Strava heatmaps reveal hidden trails.
Public data helps authorities identify and shut down unsanctioned routes.
The same tools that built a community are now used for control.
We’re no longer invisible in the woods – we’re tracked, ranked, analyzed.

The Good Side of Smart

Let’s be fair – tech made riding safer and broader.
GPS saves lost riders. Apps discover new lines.
Smart features optimize effort and battery use.
But the real wisdom lies in knowing when to disconnect.

Back to Flow

Flow isn’t a firmware function.
It’s what happens when you forget the numbers and ride by instinct.
Maybe that’s the next evolution of MTB:
Ride smart – but stay wild.

Technology isn’t the enemy – dependency is.
Digital tools can enhance the ride, or erase it.
Freedom means using them with intention – not addiction.
The best data?
The smile you can’t measure.
