Between range obsession, charging paranoia and the truth from real riders.
Published by Radical Life Studios / MTB Report
Everyone’s an expert when it comes to e-bike batteries.
“Never charge above 80%.” “Always store at room temperature.” “Don’t let it drop below 20%.”
Sounds scientific – but most of it’s superstition.
A battery isn’t sacred. It’s a tool.
And its lifespan depends less on lab rules and more on how you ride.
The Perfect Cycle Myth
Manufacturers quote 700–1,000 cycles.
Few riders know what that means.
One full cycle equals 0–100%.
Two half-charges? One cycle.
In real life, that means thousands of kilometers –
but it’s all about heat, usage and habits.
Range Is Relative
Forget “120 km per charge.”
Range depends on terrain, temperature, tire pressure and rider weight.
A 720 Wh battery can die after 40 km in the Alps or last 150 on gravel.
Both are correct.
Range isn’t a number – it’s context.
The Deep-Discharge Fear
Modern systems protect themselves.
You can’t “kill” a battery by riding it empty once.
But leaving it unused for months at 0% or 100%? That’s the real damage.
Best storage level: 30–60%.
Best practice: ride often.
Heat: The Silent Killer
Cold limits power. Heat destroys it.
Store smart. Avoid the sun. Treat it like your own body:
it hates extremes.
Software Matters
Firmware updates control charging curves and longevity.
Skip them, and you waste potential.
Yes – your battery has software, too.
Battery life isn’t chemistry – it’s behavior.
Ride, charge smart, avoid extremes.
Everything else is forum fantasy.
The best battery? The one that gets you home.
